MAISHA YA HALF LIFE – Panel Discussions
NAIROBI HALF LIFE is Kenya’s best known feature film. The Kenyan-German co-production was produced as a joint collaboration between ONE FINE DAY FILMS and Ginger Ink, with the support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the DW Akademie and GIZ to upskill Kenyan filmmakers. Since its release in 2011, the film has screened at over 150 film festivals, won numerous awards, played almost an entire year in Kenyan cinemas and moved audiences around the world.
NAIROBI HALF LIFE also marked the beginning of a new era for Kenyan filmmakers. Exposed by the visibility of the film, the industry experienced a new value and new business possibilities presented themselves for the Kenyan film industry at large and for individual, independent filmmakers. Both, an inspiration and a new landmark of opportunities, ten years down the line we want to ask the questions: „What has the film achieved, how did it impact the Kenyan film industry and where are gaps still visible?“ Drawing from the experience of the parties involved and the adjoining industry, the question of „What is still missing for the industry to reach its full potential?“ shall be examined, discussed and recommendations for the next decade designed.
